Wednesday, November 3, 2010 - TWO Manitobans were honoured Tuesday as military heroes, receiving medals in Ottawa from the Governor General. Master Cpl. Paul Alexander Munroe risked his life under enemy fire in Afghanistan to get his comrades and their equipment to safety. Munroe, of Stonewall and Swan River, got a Medal of Military Valour. Capt. Connie Noreen Watson helped get thousands of Canadians out of Haiti after the disastrous earthquake there. Watson, of Winnipeg, got a Meritorious Service Medal They were among 39 officers and military personnel honoured at Rideau Hall in Ottawa Tuesday by Governor General David Johnston. Munroe's acts of bravery were conducted on the battlefield on Aug. 19, 2006 in Afghanistan. In the midst of a three-hour firefight, Munroe and another officer braved danger to get their platoon to safety. "Their heroic actions under constant fire enabled the platoon to regroup and continue the fight while denying the enemy an opportunity to capture and make use of Canadian equipment," Rideau Hall said in a statement. Meanwhile, Watson, who serves out of 23 Health Services Centre at 17 Wing, was honoured for her service in the face of extreme disaster. She was deployed from January to March to Haiti as a member of Canada's rescue mission following the devastating earthquake that struck that country. Watson's story is already the stuff of heroes on Winnipeg's blog world for assisting in the evacuation of 4,000 Canadians, including individuals with life-threatening illnesses and injuries. Watson worked with the Canadian Embassy, other medical professionals and aid workers to ensure as many earthquake victims as possible received thorough medical treatment, despite having only basic medical equipment at her disposal and lacking normal shelter facilities, Rideau Hall said. Watson was flying back to Winnipeg Tuesday evening from Ottawa and was unavailable for comment. Source: Winnipeg Free Press |
