Governments Invest in Winnipeg’s Recreational Infrastructure

Winnipeg, Manitoba - The Linwood Child Centre Inc. will move forward with renovations thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

“This important project is delivering for the families in our community, while creating immediate jobs through the construction phase,” said Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State for Democratic Reform and Member of Parliament for Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.

“The City of Winnipeg is committed to reinvesting in community playgrounds and recreational facilities because it translates into positive alternatives for our children which are invaluable,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “I am proud that we have this opportunity with our government partners to continue ensuring safe and healthy structures and facilities for our children.”

With this funding, the Linwood Child Centre, located in the Deer Lodge Community Centre, will rehabilitate two natural play areas and replace an aging play structure. Both play areas will be accessible for children of all ages.

“We at Linwood Child Centre are so grateful for this funding provided by Western Economic Diversification Canada,” said Marian Rands, Executive Director. “It will be used to enhance the Deer Lodge neighbourhood and will benefit the families in this community for many years to come.”

Funding of $85,921 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.  The City of Winnipeg is contributing $100,000 to this project.

The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
