Government of Canada Announces Investment to Create Jobs in Manitoba
November 28, 2009
Winnipeg, Manitoba - James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk - Interlake, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support to help the Farmers’ Markets Association of Manitoba Co-op Inc. (FMAM) strengthen economic opportunities in the province. “Today’s investment is about helping our producers,” said MP Bezan. “By funding this project, our Government is helping grow local communities and economies so we can emerge from this economic slowdown stronger than ever.” Under the project, improvements are being made to 31 farmers’ market sites in Manitoba. Work includes planting shelter belts, fixing or replacing canopies and covers, and erecting fixtures to improve the sites. Federal funding of $450,000 is being provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. “FMAM is thrilled to partner with the Government of Canada on the Farmers’ Market Enhancement Project,” said Dianna Mae Hocaluk, Executive Director. “This infrastructure will definitely make an impact on our markets, local economies and create employment for our rural communities.” A part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, CAF is a two-year, $1 billion national program that will provide an economic stimulus by supporting projects that create jobs and maintain employment in rural communities. The fund will provide $306 million over two years to support the most affected western Canadian communities, such as those that are heavily reliant on resource-based industries, for instance forestry, mining, agriculture, and fisheries, and communities that depend on the manufacturing industry. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the fund in the four western provinces.
