July 14, 2009

Notre-Dame de Lourdes, Manitoba - The community of Notre-Dame de Lourdes will be able to move forward with improvements to their arena thanks to funding from the two levels of government.

Today, Candice Hoeppner, Member of Parliament for Portage-Lisgar, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification and the Honourable Ron Lemieux, Manitoba Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation announced federal and provincial funding for the rehabilitation of the Notre Dame Arena that will create jobs for the community.

"I'm pleased to announce our Government's support for the Notre Dame Arena Rehabilitation project," said MP Hoeppner. "Recreational facilities, such as this arena, are the social and athletic heartbeat of our communities. They bring us together as families, friends and neighbours to learn new skills, exchange ideas, get fit and healthy, and have fun."

"The opportunities this investment is creating is a huge benefit to the community," said Minister Lemieux. "Physical activity will be enhanced year-round because of these improvements and more jobs will be added to the local economy."

Funding of $200,000 is provided through Western Economic Diversification Canada under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, with the Province of Manitoba and the Village of Notre Dame also contributing to the eligible project costs.

Improvements to the Notre Dame Arena will include pouring a cement base foundation for the ice surface and installing a new artificial ice plant system allowing for multi-seasonal use of the facility, extended facility life and improved recreational programming opportunities.

"The Arena Rejuvenation Committee is grateful for the grant monies allocated to their project from the RInC program," said Donald Vigier, President of the Notre Dame Arena Rejuvenation Committee. "This money will enable the committee to modernize the arena and make changes that will render it accessible 12 months of the year. The community has been planning this for a long time."

The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, is part of Canada's Economic Action Plan.  RInC will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.

Today's announcement continues the important steps the Province of Manitoba is taking to support economic growth by investing $1.6 billion this year into infrastructure to stimulate the economy, create jobs, and renew the province's roads, schools, health facilities, and water treatment facilities.
