Continuing to Make our Streets And Communities Safer
May 09, 2011
Monday, May 9, 2011, Ottawa - Today, Public Safety Minister Vic Toews addressed the National Police Association at their Annual General Meeting and reaffirmed the Harper Government’s commitment to making our streets safe for Canadian families.

  • A week ago, Canadians elected a stable, stable, national, majority Conservative Government.
  • With this mandate, we will continue working for the best interests of hard-working, law-abiding families across Canada.
  • We will continue to put the rights of law-abiding citizens and victims above those of criminals.
  • Prior to the unnecessary election, our Government was attempting to pass many pieces of legislation to protect society and hold criminals accountable, including bills to:
    • End house arrest for serious and violent criminals:
    • Establish tougher sentences and mandatory jail time for sexual offences against children
    • Eliminate pardons for serious criminals, including those who sexually abuse our children
  • As per our Platform, we will bundle these bills into comprehensive legislation, and pass them within the new Parliament’s first 100 sitting days.
  • We are proud to have earned Canadians’ trust. In return we pledge to continue working to make our country’s streets and communities safe and secure.
