Government of Canada Supports Land Management in Langford

Langford, Manitoba, October 1, 2010 - The Government of Canada has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable agriculture and protecting the natural heritage of Manitoba rural municipalities by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Manitoba Habitat Heritage Corporation and the municipalities of Langford and Lansdowne to protect the Langford Community Pasture. Merv Tweed, MP for Brandon-Souris, signed the MOU on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz.

"This Government is working with the rural municipalities and the provinces to maintain the prairie grassland as part of the natural heritage of communities like Langford and Lansdowne," said MP Tweed. "By protecting the Langford Community Pasture, we are helping to maintain a sustainable agriculture industry, one that will continue to benefit Canadians for generations to come."

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada manages more than 2 million acres of grazing land in 85 community pastures throughout the Prairies and has managed the Langford Community Pasture for six decades. The grazing management practices implemented on these lands strive to maintain healthy range conditions that not only provide sustainable grazing, but enhance the habitat for many desirable species of plants and wildlife.

The Langford Community Pasture consists of 21,195 acres of land providing grazing for 2000 heads of cattle belonging to 26 producers from the local community. The signing of today’s Memorandum of Understanding ensures that six decades of management experience in the Langford pasture will continue to benefit pasture users and the environment.
